Minnie Manger Marcia Lieberman Mikvah
The Stamford Jewish Community is one that builds on the legacy of past generations to propel us into the future. In 2011, our current mikvah was dedicated by the B.L. Manger Foundation, Inc. and the Family of Ben (zt" l) and Faye (zt" l) Manger: Renee Manger, Marc Manger, Joyce Maskart, and Stephen Manger (zt" l).
In Renee Manger’s words:
“Minnie Manger was my grandmother–– my Baba–– and her daughter Marcia Lieberman was one of five older sisters to my Dad, Ben Manger. Marcia was the mom of Senator Joe Lieberman. My Aunt Marcia was the only one of the five sisters who religiously observed the mikvah. Fourteen years ago, when this mikvah was dedicated, my family chose to name the mikvah after these two important women.
The story I was always told was that a new and attractive mikvah opened in the Bronx, which was an attractive alternative to the mikvah that existed at the time here in Stamford. The mikvah at the time was located at the old Agudath Sholom Synagogue, now a church, situated on the intersection of Grove Street and Broad Street. This mikvah was not so attractive, and it was undoubtedly an unpleasant experience. Virtually all the women in the community started commuting to the new mikvah in the Bronx. Finally, my aunt was the only woman in Stamford using the local mikvah, even though she had considered going to the one in the Bronx. But my Baba said to her daughter, Marcia,
“If you stop using the mikvah in Stamford, they will close it.”
My aunt continued here, and to her credit, a mikvah was always maintained in Stamford. I’m proud to come from a line of these two great women - my Baba and my aunt Marcia, who followed in her footsteps and continued the religious observance that my Baba exemplified. I have wonderful memories of both my Baba and Aunt, and I know they would feel very proud to see the mikvah tradition carried on and to see the support for this mikvah. There is no doubt the Stamford Jewish community has grown so much over the years because of this state-of-the-art mikvah.
As the Stamford Jewish community continues to expand, we hope and pray that the Mikvah can remain a purifying pillar of our community.
